Id left to find my life, once before, gone back to it, to try to reclaim something we once had, and then we kinda fell into that same place again. So I decided to try and teach myself. So I was ready to go, go, go, and I think pretty much everybody else in the band was. And then, yknow, after that, hes talking about not cracking the stone. Dont crack the stone. Many great drummers use them, both in studio and live. You made one more record together. I used to play with a group called the Merseysippi Jazz Band. They love the band enough to lay down on the sidewalk? The bigger the drum, the more damping you put inside it, and so you're playing less area anyway. Singers live on the edge of being powerful, being strong, and not degrading their voice, and its the most difficult edge to walk. In the winter of 1969 Retaliation appeared at the 5-day Actuel Festival, which was also attended by Frank Zappa . The band is getting better and better, and with everyone writing, I have more opportunities to play different feelings on songs. Im not whining. I mean, back roads, where theres no cars, where theres nothing but coyotes. They thought that because we had got to the point where we were selling out everywhere and making quite a bit of money, that we had reached stardom. Neal and I wrote our first song that night in the hotel room, after the show. As bizarre as it sounds, I felt like nothing had ever happened, like our arc of success almost didnt exist. It was self-indulgent music. You can be working 10, 12, 14 hours every day. So I came home, took care of that, went back, finished the vocals and stuff, and before I know it, were on tour. I imagine it was a really good way to run away from things, for a while. I said, Im gonna get it done. That was one of the most cathartic and painful and wonderful experiences Ive ever had, to go through the entire catalog, all the B-sides of albums that Id forgotten about, and remember everything about the sessions, and remember the writing of em, the struggles, the accomplishments. And the bigger drum doesn't give you any more sound on stage. Every time I saw him he was more spaced out and blank. So they put up with it for about 4 1/2 years before they told me to get out. Oh, yeah, cause it was so successful. I sing with myself all the time I'm playing. AD: When I started off listening to music as a child, I always followed the lead. Theres definitely some decisions, that are pretty personal, that I wouldnt have done the way I did, because I was not thinking clearly. For about six months, I worked with just a snare drum. At times it was wonderful, but it had been a long time, together. Well, I thinklooking back, I was sort of a workaholic. I had been through a lot of divorces, and probably a lot of em due to this problem, and I had to just really face everything on a straight level. But when I went through Liverpool on a tour with Zappa in 1971, out of all the people I knew in Liverpool, he was the only one who actually turned up backstage to shake my hand and say how well I was playing. At certain times, I've had a drum lose its tone because it has been dropped and the shell has cracked, or something has gone wrong and it's deader than the other drums and I've had to replace It. Well, Steve came out with us and started hangin outhe was hangin with me, actually, and we were roomin together, and I pulled out an acoustic guitar, and one of the first songs we wrote, in about a half an hour, was Patiently. And that just kinda came out of nowhere. And Ill tell you, to this day, I dont understand what that meant. For a while, I was doing too many studio gigs, and I couldn't wait to get on the road. You understand what Im saying? With the other company that Im a part of, Nocturne [a video-production studio]between that and the residuals that I get, yes, I could live comfortably and just hang it up. Thats interesting. AD: I left school when I was 15, and immediately formed a trio with a sax player and a keyboard player. Ive come to find out that theres a generation of kids who think its classic and wish they could find the arcade version. Well, yeah. But thats okay. He went to bat for me in a huge way. I found that I liked using two bass drums. And I was not gonna be part of that. So I went to do my first solo record with him. I cant speak for them. So Don Ellis took the liberty, about two weeks after that, of sending our tapes to Herbie Herbert, who at the time was managing Journey. I work hard the first day, then take one day off; then sort of a lighter workout on the middle day, with a day off; and then tough on the third day, with two days off afterward. Speed is what most people see. You can't have million-note fills allover the place be- cause people can't hear them, they can't understand it, and so they won't want to buy it. Listening to what he was doing, and listening to what we were doingit was like A to Z. I was goin, How are we gonna morph this together and make it work?. On the next take, I know what should be happening. [long pause, laughs.] The girls are screaming Just a small-town girl. Theyre screaming it at clubs. 'Oh no, this is not for me, I went home, and the next after noon John Mayall called me up and said, "I was sitting in the audience last night and I was wondering if you'd come down and sit in with my band." I got these ProTools sketches of songs, and I guess its time to record some of em. And I just couldnt do it anymore. I wanted to play. It felt like it was toast, and I felt like we should just stop. I drank a lot. RM: You've done quite a bit of recording. I guess I was just in denial about it, like, You gotta be kidding me. [Journey had] just reworked our partnership. But if you're backing up a soloist, the fill you played on the record might not get behind what he's doing on stage at that particular moment, because he's doing something different. AD: I used to do a lot of push-ups, sit- ups, and all that to keep myself feeling healthy, but I was still getting drained. The answer is of course theres differences between us all! I stayed with them for about six months, just to help them out because there wasn't really any band around that I could join that could take over from Zappa.
